Vivian Motzfeldt, Greenland’s Foreign Minister, was unable to hold back her tears following a tense meeting on Wednesday (14) at the White House.

Together with Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Minister Motzfeldt met with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an effort to ease tensions between the United States and Greenland.

Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to annex the island of Greenland to the United States. Despite the efforts of the delegation, the situation did not change significantly.

“We were not able to change the American position,” Rasmussen said, according to Politico. “It is clear that the president has this desire to take over Greenland. We made it very, very clear that this is not in the interest of the Kingdom.”

The minister later could not hold back her tears while speaking about the issue during a live interview on Greenland’s Kalaallit Nunaata Radio.

“I normally would not want to say these words, but I will say them: we are very strong. We are doing our very best. But in recent days, naturally… Oh, I am becoming very emotional. I am overwhelmed.”

She went on to say that she and her team have been working hard to “ensure that the Greenlandic people in our country can feel safe and live with peace of mind.”

“We are using all our strength to achieve this while continuing our work,” the minister said.

Donald Trump has remained firm in his idea of annexing Greenland to the United States because, according to him, China and Russia are also seeking to take control of the region.
